Pulotu, the proto-Polynesian word for the abode of the gods, is a database of supernatural beliefs and practices across Austronesian cultures. The database includes 116 Austronesian cultures and 62 variables on religion, history, society, and the natural environment. This database is specifically designed to test evolutionary hypotheses of religious belief and practice, with a primary focus on the traditional state of cultures. A major advantage of Pulotu is that robust language phylogenies are available for Austronesian cultures. This enables the use of phylogenetic comparative methods which provide the ability to reconstruct the states of proto-cultures, account for common ancestry in cross cultural analysis, and test for correlated evolution between traits.

Pulotuとは、プロトポリネシア語で「神々の住まい」を意味する言葉に由来し、オーストロネシア文化の超自然的な信念や実践に関するデータベースです。データベースは、116のオーストロネシア文化についての宗教、歴史、社会、および自然環境に関する62の項目を記述しています。このデータベースは、特に文化の伝統的な状態が主な焦点で、宗教的信念と実践の進化の仮説を検証するために設計されています。 Pulotuの主な利点は、オーストロネシア語族の文化について、堅牢な言語の系統発生が分かっているということです。このおかげで、原始文化の状態を再現したり、異文化間分析で共通の祖先を説明したり、各特徴の相関進化を検証したりするのを可能にする系統発生比較方法が使えます。

もちろん、項目が多すぎて欠損値だらけなんだが、それぞれの値に文献情報が付いているのはすばらしい。レビューマトリックスみたいになっているわけだ。それぞれの項目の意味とかは項目に１対１対応しているわけではないが用語集が提供されている。
また、vが付いている以外の基本４項目についてだが、たとえば
Ajie "The indigenous people of New Caledonia are known today as Kanaks, an exonym derived from the Hawaiian 'kanaka'. While linguistically diverse, the Kanak people share a similar culture. The Ajie-speaking Kanaks of the Houailou Valley were described in detail by the French missionary / ethnographer Maurice Leenhardt, who oversaw their conversion to Christianity in the early twentieth century. Prior to this, religion among the Ajie speakers had been based primarily around rhee (totems, inherited matrilineally) and bao (patrilineal ancestral spirits), which Leenhardt saw as forming a dualistic system. のようになっていて、初め２項目は文化名とその説明、isocode は About の訳でも示したようにロバストな系統がわかっている言語のものだ。つまり iso 639。ajiはhttp://www-01.sil.org/iso639-3/documentation.asp?id=ajiから Ajië のことだと確認できる。ABVD_Code は Austronesian Basic Vocabulary Databaseの Language コードと思われ、確かに Mota が 25 なのは ABVD: Mota で一致するのだが、ajie については ABVD: Houaïlouという名前になっている。しかし、ここからリンクされているデータベース群から例えばOLAC resources in and about the Ajië languageを見てみると、Other known names and dialect names: A'jie, Anjie, Houailou, Wai, Wailu と書かれていて、これは別名であることがわかる。
データベースを繋ぐのに、それぞれのコードが用いられているのだな。
